PRESS RELEASE
The Decapitation of NYPD Executive Minority Representation
Date: Saturday, November 1, 2014
Time: 11:00 AM
Location: Front of Main Entrance of 1 Police Plaza
Within thirty days the de Blasio/Bratton Administration has forced the retirement of Chief of Department Philip Banks III and First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro, two highly accomplished minority executives whose contributions made the City of New York one of the safest cities in America.
Police Commissioner Bratton has gone back on a promise he made to the city residents and our elected officials to diversify the executive leadership of the New York City Police Department, so that it is reflective of the city! The thousands of minority police officers mentored over the span of their respective careers recognize that qualifications DO NOT MATTER if you are not a member of a the good-ole-boys network.
Despite Hispanic and African American Police Officers making up 43% of the overall NYPD uniform workforce, many with advanced degrees, only 17% hold appointed positions above the rank of Deputy Inspector. However Caucasian Police Officers overall represent 52% of the uniform workforce and they hold 82% of the appointed ranks above the rank of Deputy Inspector. The numbers do not lie and represent a disparity that exists because the de Blasio/Bratton Administration refuses to even consider the many highly qualified minorities within and outside the NYPD. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE?
The National Latino Officers Association, Grand Council of Guardians and 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, joined by other community based organizations, call on Mayor de Blasio to do as he promised – “create more success stories” by making New York City government look like New York City.
