Calling on NYC Mayor de Blasio to Respect the Latino Community!
Date: Monday, November 17, 2014 at 10:00 AM
Location: Steps of City Hall
The National Latino Officers Association is requesting support from members, family, friends and community residents to attend this crucial citywide press conference. We are calling on NYC Mayor de Blasio to respect the Latino Community, as we are the most underrepresented community in the de Blasio Administration.
- The Mayor has shown disrespect to the Latino community by ignoring our request for a meeting directly with him to discuss our concerns about his lack of adequate numbers of Latino appointments to his Administration and what to do about it
- Latinos are 29% of the NYC population, but less than 12% of appointments by the de Blasio Administration
- The majority of these few Latino appointments are concentrated in only 3 of the 39 City agencies
- Latinos make up only 20% of total municipal employees and are concentrated in lower paying agencies
- In terms of policy making positions, there are no Latinos in a majority of city agencies and other entities
- The city’s agencies are racially segregated: 23 have predominantly White staffs; 17 have predominantly Black staff, and none have predominantly Latino or Asian staffs
We are calling for:
- Mayor de Blasio to personally address this problem and meet directly with our representatives to discuss our concerns and develop a concrete plan of action
- The establishment of a Latino Employment Diversity Task Force composed of city officials and community representatives to address the problem of the long-standing Latino under-representation in the city’s civil service workforce
- The audit and review of the poor performance in addressing the underutilization of the Latino workforce of the city’s diversity employment and anti-discrimination programs run by the Department of Citywide Administration Services (DCAS), the Human Rights Commission, the Civil Service Commission and the Equal Employment Practices Commission
